This form of Colchicum of which I couldn’t find a proper English name, but translated it could be Hungarian Meadow Saffron, is from the Balkan and flowers december-march normally. Its a rather difficult species but today he was flowering again for the third year. Colchicum is not familiar to the crocus but is a liliaceae, a Lily. Crocus (a genus what lookes like Colchicum) belongs to the order of iridaceae or Irisses.
Deze herfsttijloos heeft geen echte nederlandse naam, maar je zou het kunnen vertalen als de hongaarse herfsttijloos. Oorspronkelijk komt hij uit de Balkan. Hij bloeit in de winter van december tot maart meestal. Het is een moeilijke soort, maar het is al weer het derde jaar dat ie bloeit. Herfsttijloos is een geneeskrachtige plant van de lelie familie en is niet verwant aan de crocus die er als bloem wel wat op lijkt. De crocus behoort tot de iris familie. Colchicum werd vroeger in de geneeskunde gebruikt vanwege het colchine, maar dat is zo giftig dat tegenwoordig het gebruik ernstig wordt afgeraden. Ook natuurlijke geneesmiddelen kunnen levensgevaarlijk zijn bij ondeskundig gebruik, het idee dat alles wat uit de natuur komt veilig zou zijn is volslagen onzin.

Hi – This is a really pretty flower, and a very clear photo of it. Here in Kenya, we also have many types of wild Lilies, all looking quite different from each other. Last year, when I got married, I said to the lady who baked my wedding cake, that I wanted to decorate the cake myself with fresh flowers – she said, no problem, as long as you don’t use any flowers that grow from a bulb – like lilies – for they are poisonous! So that is how I learned that all lilies are poisonous…but as you say, you don’t need to eat them to enjoy looking at them!Thanks for sharing your images and your knowledge,Tanya
